A Gates Glidden drill (also known as a Gates Glidden bur or GG drill) is a flame-shaped, blunted-tip stainless steel instrument used in endodontics to enlarge the coronal portion of the root canal.

They are operated by a slow-speed

• Coronal Flaring: Their primary use is to widen the root canal orifice and the coronal third of the canal, creating a straighter, easier access path for subsequent endodontic files and reamers.
• Dentin and Gutta-percha Removal: The side-cutting blades efficiently remove bulk tooth structure or filling material (gutta-percha) during initial preparation, retreatment, or post-space preparation.
• Post Space Preparation: They are effective for preparing the straight space in the canal required for fitting a post in post-and-core procedures.
• Safety Feature: The drills are designed with a thin, weak neck so that if they bind or are overstressed, they will preferentially break near the top of the shaft, facilitating easier retrieval of the fractured segment from the canal.
